Lions Head Athletic 2 BUOB 1

Bramford gave a rather inept performance in the first fixture of the New Year, missing a number of chances and gifting their hosts a goal each half.

The early exchanges were mainly confined to the midfield, although Bramford's attacks generally carried more of a threat with the pace of Mattie McLaughlin and Ian Buxton. Mattie McLaughlin was especially unfortunate with three efforts, two of which got held up on a very sticky pitch and the other a shot which struck the head of the last defender who did well to get back on the line after the keeper had been left on his back.

A defensive mistake then presented Lions Head with a chance which was put away at the near post, the ball should really have been put out for a corner before the forward even had an opportunity to shoot.

The second half was almost a carbon copy of the first, as Bramford squandered possession too often, the final ball being really rather poor on too many occasions. Scott Welton was having another good game in midfield for the visitors, but despite his promptings the chances came and went.

Lions Head were looking dangerous on the break and extended their lead when Gary Cox was left exposed on the right and was beaten at the near post. Bramford threw caution to the wind and played three at the back and three up front and with just a couple of minutes to go earned a penalty when Drew Turner's cross was handled. The kick was struck home sweetly by Ricky O'Neill who had earlier struck the side netting after a great solo effort and Dan Turner just missed the target after being put clear on the right. Even though the final whistle was about to be blown, Bramford did create a couple of half chances but just could not share the spoils.

One had to admire the resilience of Lions Head but really and truly Bramford would have taken all three points if they had put half of their chances away. Thanks to Paul Jenkins in the middle and a happy New Year to all.
