BUOB 6 Lions Club Athletic 2

This lively and keenly contested encounter at Bourne Park ended in an emphatic win for the hosts but the final score doesn' accurately reflect what was for the furts half, a very even game. Both sides had chances early on, the visitors having two efforts from corners and a direct free kick which could have put the Lions ahead. At the other end, some really slick play presented Mattie McLaughlin with an opportunity but his fierce shot was just too high. Bramford eventually took the lead through a fine individual effort from the same player who showede fantastic control in the box, beating three defenders before unleashing a powerful drive into the net. Lions Head equalised on the stroke of half time from a corner, Shaun Smith just failing to clear the goal bound header off the line.

Bramford had the better of the second period and were ahead within five minutes when Mattie McLaughlin took his chance well and fired home from within the box. Although there were one or two scares for the hosts, their lead was extended when a Lions Head defender unfortunately chested a dangerous in swinging cross from Mattie McLaughlin over his own line. The result was put beyond doubt when Stuart Rodger drove home from the penalty spot. Although the visitors reduced the arrears through a penalty conceded by keeper Gary Cox, the taker knocking in the rebound after a good reaction save, central defender Aron Boorman got on th eend of a knock down in the box to strike home from five yards. Fellow defender Mattie Pryke headed the final goal just before the final whistle to complete a fine display.

Darren and Shaun Smith completed a resolute defensive display and both Stuart Rodger and Scott Welton had outstanding games in midfield, well complimented by Stan Wragg, Asherly Rose and, for the second half, Adam Turner. Ian Buxton again led the line with pace, determination and no little ability and Drew Turner showed what an intelligent and gifted player he is for the last twenty five minutes, earning a penalty which unfortunately he failed to convert. Defender Steve Hayward-Jones slotted in at left back for the last fifteen minutes and performed soundly. Three hard earned points indeed.
